Ancient statues
The Ancient Statue as an independent form began to appear with the rise of Greek civilization.
The art of this period conceived Period Statues as free from architectural rules, giving them freedom of movement without rigid stabilization.
Paintings of the time, and ancient painting in general, showed an illusory atmosphere, while the Greek Statue stood before us as a concrete, powerful reality, impossible to ignore.
In that era, the reasons for creating a Marble Statue were strongly tied to religion or even magic.
Another major reason for producing Ancient Statues was divine origin, seen as a gift from the gods, on which the community’s fortunes depended.
Cult Statues in ancient Greece were often small, made of precious materials like olive wood, gold, ivory, and bronze.
The artistic innovation of Nude Statues led to new technical studies of marble statues: initially supported by pillars, they were later placed on pedestals, in the center of rooms, visible from every angle.
After Divine Role Statues, attention shifted to real figures portrayed heroically, often in gymnasia.
With Hellenism, however, Plaster Statues and Religious Statues lost importance, giving way to statues representing everyday people, placed in gardens or homes, making the Ancient Statue an Ornamental Statue.
How were Greek statues made?
To create small ancient objects, the Greeks used ivory, bone, gold, and silver.
These items were offered in sanctuaries, often with small hooks to hang them.
Metals were melted to facilitate handling and for creating intricate objects.
Ancient Statues were cast with integrated bases, or had feet fitting into holes in the base.
Among numerous Greek Finds we also see vases and tools decorated with bronze and silver.
In summary: for Objects, silver and bronze were preferred; for jewelry and accessories, gold was the metal of choice.
How were they shaped? Through casting, engraving, granulation, and many other techniques—methods no longer used today for making Stone Statues.
